CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A.
Background
of Study
Teaching
English is means to teach the student how they can communicate English. Because
communication is needed in social life interaction then the student are
expected to be able to communicate and interact internationally.
Communication
not only can be done in spoken but also in written, for instance, to apply for
post in a company, to ask for a catalogue of prince or product, to order or
purchase goods in business world. To invite for a formal occasion. The written
communication tends to be used to do so, besides written communication is also
considered more polite to be used in such activities mentioned above,
especially in a formal written communication.
Since
written communication is still needed, it is also necessary to tech the
students how to write, especially in English. However, it would be hard work to
teach them such a communication. Because it involves many component such as
structure, vocabulary, punctuation and spelling, so it will make the writer think hard about what exactly the
points to be described it.
By
considering so many type of genre in written English the written in interested
in one genre, that is, “Descriptive writing.”Such writing attracts the written
since it focuses one phenomenon that should be described, of course it will not
be easy to describe something that does not exist, something.
That
cannot be seen, felt, smelt, or even touched or in country, the writer is not
there in the place that we want to describe. As Thomas (1985:137) said “a description helps your reader to
visualize the thing you are describing”.
Based
statement above though teaching writing with descriptive text is make the
student are expected to understand the material presented well or at least they
can describe the things more vividly.
The
development of since and technology, especially in information communication
and technology is very fast. There is a technique to teach descriptive text
such as using a computer. In this case, the writer wants to try using Microsoft
PowerPoint in teaching descriptive text.
PowerPoint
is used to help the teacher and the student in teaching learning process.
Microsoft PowerPoint is an application program of presentation to enplaned material that is found in
Microsoft office, the biggest benefit of this program is that the teacher do
not needed to buy new software because it has been include in Microsoft office
program.
The
points are that the using of Microsoft PowerPoint is very important to support
the teaching writing presses especially in teaching descriptive writing.
Limitation of problem
In this paper, the
writer limits the discussion in Descriptive writing in paragraph. An
interesting description attracts the reader’s attention.
Research
Question
Based on the background of the study
described above, the writer will try to find out:
1. How
we have often (not) taught writing in the past?
2. Do
the Microsoft PowerPoint media have advantages in Teaching Descriptive writing
skill?
3. What
are the disadvantages of Microsoft PowerPoint In teaching Descriptive writing
skill?
B.
Purposes
of the study
Accordingly the purpose of the research
is to find out the advantages and disvantages of using Microsoft PowerPoint. In
teaching descriptive writing skill.
The
purpose of this paper:
1. To
know the students’ often ask” But how do I write a purely the student essay?
What’s the point of description? What’ so different about it?
2. To
know the good descriptive writing for student?

Research
Methodology
1.
Approach
In social research,
study of research them. Topic and title of research were found differences
between quantitative and qualitative approach in substance on material.
The field research will be held in
Junior High School students by a test to know the difficulties in understanding
describe something in writing.
2.
Population
and Sample
In
this research, population and sample is needed to gain information about a
population. According to Gay (1990:9):
“The purpose of sampling is to gain information about a population,
rarely is a study conducted that includes the total population of interest as
subjects”
Based
on the quotation above, to run the research, the writer needs the sample and
population of the research as an object.

Population
The population in this research is the
students of Junior High School.
b)
Sample
The sample of the
study, the writer takes 20 students of Junior High School from Class Two Junior
High School. They are divided into four groups; i.e. those describe something
such as, place, classmate, room and anything else in there topic.

Instrument
In the research
activity, research instrument is a mean of collecting data that purpose to obtain
information about the condition, and characteristic of the population. In
collecting the data the writer gives a test.

Procedure
Collecting Data
In
collecting the data, the writer uses some methods, such as:

Test
The test was given to the students was
aimed at knowing the students’ ability in understanding something with the
describe something. The writer hopes that test becomes one of the easiest ways
to answer the students’ difficulties in understanding describe something in
writing text.

Analyzing
Data
To analyze errors of
using personal writing in descriptive writing the writer needed the result of
descriptive writing test data.
To make the data collection easer, the writer used. Simple procedure of
collecting data. The steps are:
a. Distributing
test on English descriptive writing.
b. Collecting
the answer sheet after they finessed.
c. Selecting
the data related to the use of describe something in the writing.
